Reef Williams offers both entry level and more experienced divers a great dive site. Entry level divers who don't have any issues with their buoyancy will get the chance to do some wall diving at 18-20 meters.
Getting there:
By car, from Zurich city: If you are driving from Zurich city drive down Seestrasse from the Bellevue side of the lake towards Rapperswil. Continue driving for about 15 minutes until you get to Herrliberg. The site itself if a little difficult to find, so if you've never been there before it might be best if you first park your car in the restaurant "Il Faro" on your left-hand side as you drive down Seestrasse. If you come to the ferry at Meilen you have driven too far, turn around and go back to locate the restaurant (see instructions below). By car, from Rapperswil: Drive up towards Zurich, through Meilen and past the ferry terminal on your left. A short distance after this you should see the restaurant "Il Faro" on your right. Park here, you will locate the site on foot (see instructions below).
By public transport: Take the train to Bahnhof Herrliberg-Feldmeilen. Leave the station heading towards the lake, walk down to the Seestrasse and turn right. Walk for approximately 500 meters, past the ferry to the restaurant "Il Faro" (see instructions below).
From the restaurant "Il Faro": Walk across Seestrasse and turn right, walking up towards Zurich. After about 100 meters you'll see a garden area reserved for residents of Herrliberg with a gate and a fence. If you walk just past this you'll find a hedge and a small path leading to a public grass area by the lake. This is the dive site. If you've come by car now would be a good time to return to the restaurant and move your car closer to the dive site.
Parking: There are limited parking spaces at this site and during periods of good weather you may have trouble getting a space, parking is in the white painted areas by the sides of the road.
Entry / Exit: You'll notice a ladder at this site leading down a high wall into the water. The water here is very shallow, and a large flat rock area forms an ideal place for a large group to put on their fins and prepare for the dive. Don't forget to place your dive flag before heading down the ladder. Once you are ready to descend simply slide off the edge of the rock platform into the deeper water.
Dive Area (Surface): This site is limited by a small garden area, however once in the water you are free to travel either left towards Rapperswil or right towards Zurich. As the site features a sloping bottom, there should never be any need to venture far from the shore.
Dive Area (Underwater): There are two possibilities for dives at this site. The first is to head left (Rapperswil). This option is good for divers who don't want to go below 20 meters, and who would like to do a nice wall dive. The other possibility is to head right (Zurich) and down to 30 meters. This option may suit divers who don't have a problem with a deeper dive. Both dive possibilities will be detailed.
Left (Rapperswil): Start the dive by dropping down off the edge of the rock platform at the start. This is about four meters deep. You may also notice a shield attached to the wall with a picture of a turtle on it. Head down the slope and to the left until you reach 18 to 20 meters. Continue at this depth and before long you'll find yourself swimming along a wall. Look in the crevices in the wall; it is common to see Trüsche (burbot) hiding in the cracks. They are a fish that looks like a cross between a catfish and an eel. At this depth a lamp is not always needed, but if you've brought one it might enhance your dive. Continue along this wall until you reach 100 bar, and which point you should probably turn around and start a gradual ascent to ten meters. After travelling at ten meters adjust your depth to five meters, and you will probably soon reach a steep wall with the shield of the turtle on it. This is your exit point. If you've missed the exit point you'll find that you cross over some chains. These chains attach to mooring buoys, simply count the number of chains you have crossed, turn around and count the same number again - you will be near the exit point.
Right (Zurich): Start the dive by dropping down off the edge of the rock platform at the start. This is about four meters deep. You may also notice a shield attached to the wall with a picture of a turtle on it. Head down the slope and to the right until you reach 30 meters. Continue at this depth with the slope on your right shoulder, and you should locate a large submerged tree. Continue at this depth, or any depth you choose for the rest of the dive, turning around if you wish to do so at 100 bar. You can locate the exit point when you find the wall with the turtle shield at four meters.
What to look for: Fish are less common at this site, but have been spotted occasionally. It is far more common to see Trüsche at this site at the lower depths. Hecht can be seen here occasionally at shallower depths.
Facilities: There are no toilets available at this site. The nearest toilets are in the restaurants nearby (e.g. Il Faro).
