Under ice, Urisee, AustriaIn North-eastern Tirol, Austria, near the border of Germany, lies the Urisee. During the warmer months this is a popular location for divers, though it is probably not worth the drive from Zurich - except for one aspect - during the winter months this is an excellent spot for ice diving!

What is the diving like?
This review will focus specifically on ice diving. The lake itself is not large, and is very well suited to ice diving. One of the most appealing aspects is that the lake it just a short walk from the hotel, and the hotel includes a dive base. This dramatically reduces the "hassle factor" of ice diving. You can get your gear ready in comfort, and walk a short distance to he lake wearing your gear. The water during the ice diving season is very clear, and since ice diving mostly involves diving under the ice and looking upwards, the rest of the conditions in the lake aren't so important (depth, etc.).

How do I get there?
From Zurich drive towards St. Gallen, then keep heading towards Bregenz. After you cross the border from Austria to Germany you'll be on the A96. Continue on the A96,  take the B12 towards Kempten. After Kempten you'll take the A7 in the direction of Füssen. Continue driving through Füssen, then pick up the signs to Reutte. Urisee is in Reutte, you can follow the signs in the town to the lake. Total driving time from Zurich is around 3 - 3.5 hours.

Where should I stay?
As the Urisee is privately owned, you must stay at the Sporthotel Urisee. Actually, it is possible to stay elsewhere and the buy a daily pass to dive in the lake, but there is little point in doing this.

Is there a dive base or compressor nearby?
Absolutely - the dive base is located in the hotel, and your cylinders will be refilled after each dive. The PADI Ice Diver specialty course is also offered on certain weekends.

When is the best time to go?
Usually the best time for ice diving is January and February - book early to ensure your place at the hotel or on a course. It is also possible to dive in this lake all year round, though the highlight is the ice diving.

Ice diving instructor, Urisee, AustriaWhat about equipment?
The water is a little colder than Lake Zurich in the summer months, but a 7 mm wetsuit with hood will be more than enough. For ice diving during the winter months a dry suit is recommended. You also have the possibility to hire and purchase scuba equipment directly at the hotel.

Are there any pre-requisites?
If you'd like to dive under the ice, then you'll need an ice diving certification. If you'd like to take part in the PADI Ice Diver specialty course you'll need a minimum of Advanced Open Water Diver or equivalent.

Is there anything else I should know?
Nothing in particular, for all other information please see the website of the hotel. The altitude of the lake is approximately 900 metres above sea level.
