Santa Margherita, Italy PDF Print E-mail
Santa Margherita, ItalyIn just five hours by car you could be diving in the warmer water of the Mediterranean. It is hard to imagine that we could find diving conditions akin to tropical areas so close to home!

What is the diving like?
Many species of fish, corals and shipwrecks - this area has a lot to offer. Almost all of the diving is from boats, and there is a choice of a range of sites. You can see everything from octopus to crabs, hard and soft corals. You can find descriptions of each individual dive site here.

How do I get there?
Drive through the Gotthard tunnel and head towards Milan. In the area of Milan take the A7 to Genova, then the A12 in the direction of La Spezia. Leave the A12 via the Rapallo exit, and continue to St. Margherita. You can also find a map with instructions here. Once you arrive, locate your hotel (depending on which one you are staying in). The town is not large, so it isn't difficult to find your way around.

Where should I stay?
To be completed later

Is there a dive base or compressor nearby?
Yes - in fact this review concentrates on one particular dive base, the European Dive Center. There are other dive bases in the town, but this one has consistently provided good service, and was co-founded by an Englishman, Miles Crookes. Miles is a PADI Course Director with 16 years experience in the business. The dive centre can provide air or nitrox refills as well as full equipment hire. They also run frequent boat trips to all the local sites.

When is the best time to go?
The weather in this area is considerably warmer than Zurich, so anytime except Winter is nice. It is particularly nice in the off-season during spring and autumn when the area is a little less busy, but the diving is still great.

Santa Christo, Santa Margherita, ItalyWhat about equipment?
Since you have already been using your 7 mm wetsuit, why not take it with you? Water temperature varies depending on the time of year - in summer you might get away with a 5 mm suit and hood, in spring or autumn you might need both parts of your 7 mm suit. Dry suits are not necessary, and are likely to become very uncomfortable during the boat ride out to the sites if the sun is shining. If you've forgotten any equipment don't worry - the dive centre can provide you with anything you need.

Are there any pre-requisites?
None, just a certification card to dive, like at any other location.

Is there anything else I should know?
This area is a prime tourist spot and it can get very difficult to find accommodation in the summer months – book early to avoid disappointment. In the off-season it is much easier to visit spontaneously. Also bear in mind that the Gotthard tunnel sits at an altitude of around 1100 metres. If you have been making deep, repetitive dives it would be wise to leave an interval of several hours before returning home.
