Boat Dives to Au PDF Print E-mail

ImageFrom time to time we organise boat trips to the peninsula (or Halbinsel in German) of Au. Au is located about half-way between Zurich and Rapperswil on the western shore of the lake.

Why Au?

The dive site is probably one of the more famous around Lake Zurich and features steep walls and drop-offs from just a few meters below the surface, down to around 80 meters. Some very interesting overhangs, small caves and sheer cliffs give this site some unique features not found at other locations.

Why not Au?

When accessing the dive site via land a very long walk of a few hundred meters with all your equipment is required, and parking can often be an issue during peak times. The solution? Arrive directly at the entry point by boat, and leave after the dive by boat - all the hassle is eliminated!

Note also that this dive is not for beginners; sheer walls and normal dive depths of 30-40 meters make this one of the more challenging dive sites around Lake Zurich. Ideally you will have already been to these depths at other sites before joining us on one of these trips. If you have any questions about your level of experience please get in touch with us.

What would I need bring?

Your full equipment - dive ready. Due to the depths a main light and backup light are required - the water is very clear, but it is usually dark. Some people do this dive with 7mm wetsuits, but it is always more fun in a dry suit.

How much does it cost and what is included?

The driver of the boat does this for us because he enjoys taking his boat out occasionally. Therefore we pay a very reasonable price of CHF35 per person. This price is paid in cash, in advance, directly to the driver. This price does not include equipment or a dive guide if you are feeling a little nervous. If you need equipment or would like to do this as a guided dive, please talk to us in advance. It does include drinks and snacks on the boat. Please note that a no-show policy applies. This means you will still be expected to pay if you cancel within 48 hours of the trip, or if you don't show up or if you are so late that you miss the boat.

ImageWhen does it happen?

This trip can be run anytime there is a group of three or more people, since this is the minimum number required for the boat to go out. During the warmer months we often schedule this trip in an evening after work. These trips are announced to our mailing list, and also appear in the schedule on this site. If you have a few people and would like to make a trip, this can also be arranged. It is also possible to run this trip on weekends if required.

Where and how does it happen?

The boat can pick us up anywhere on Lake Zurich, but since a boat is much slower than a car we usually meet at the site Grosserparkplatz in Herrliberg (see the dive site description for Grosserparkplatz to read instructions on how to get there). You will need to get there at least 30 minutes prior to the departure time to build your equipment and get into your suit. When the boat arrives we place our equipment on it and leave immediately. As it is a small boat there isn't room to put your suit on while we are underway.

The journey time to Au is usually about 15 minutes. The total time for the entire trip, including the dive is usually 1.5 hours.
